The foil rescue blanket (anti-shock blanket, thermal foil, isothermal foil) is an essential item in every first aid kit. It limits heat loss through wind and evaporation, thereby delaying the body cooling down and reducing the risk of shock worsening.

The foil is two-sided. Covering the casualty with the silver side towards the body helps retain heat, and with the gold side towards the body – the silver side facing out reflects sunlight and protects against overheating. The material is hypoallergenic metallised PET film.

Unfolded, the foil measures 210 × 160 cm and folded just 6.5 × 9 cm. The product is non-sterile and single-use, with a 5-year shelf life. Store it away from sunlight and moisture. The foil rescue blanket is worth keeping several of in a car first aid kit.

Hypothermia after injury – how to prevent it?

An injured casualty loses heat faster than you think – even in summer, on wet grass or in a draught. Hypothermia impairs blood clotting and worsens shock. Insulate the casualty from the ground, remove wet clothing if possible and wrap them tightly in the blanket, including around the neck and head. Call for help on 112 – action taken by a bystander can decide whether the casualty survives.
