Practical use of the blanket in a fire and for burns

In a fire, first assess whether it is safe and call for help straight away on 999 or 112, as this activates the emergency services. Only then can you decide how to act: if the casualty is on fire, the blanket is used to put out the flames quickly. If acting puts you in danger, you do not have to do it, and the phone call alone is already help. The blanket can be placed on the burnt area as an emergency dressing, which cools the wound and eases pain until the ambulance arrives.

Remember that a dressing does not replace medical help, and in the case of extensive burns it is necessary to call the emergency services. You can read how to assess the situation and the casualty in the article Chapter V – Assessing the casualty.
