Nasopharyngeal airway is used to keep the upper airway open when maintaining it via the mouth is difficult or impossible – e.g. with trismus, facial injury or a preserved gag reflex.
The airway is made of soft, flexible latex-free PVC. It is transparent, sterile and single-use. The tip is rounded and bevelled, so the airway is easy to insert, and insertion is safe for the patient.
Available sizes are 6.0; 6.5; 7.0; 7.5; 8.0 and 8.5. Nasopharyngeal airway is part of the basic equipment of KPP rescuers, ambulance teams and tactical medicine. Before insertion, it is worth lubricating it.
Nasopharyngeal airway works well with the OptiLube lubricant. Another model is the SUMI airway, and the technique is practised on the Nose in a Box trainer.
Why a nasopharyngeal airway?
Unlike an oropharyngeal airway, it is well tolerated by patients with a preserved gag reflex and can be inserted when the mouth is clenched. It is a simple and effective device for trained rescuers.

Opening the airway – the basics
Any bystander can open the airway of an unconscious person by tilting the head and lifting the chin, then assess breathing for 10 seconds. If the casualty is not breathing normally, call 112 and start CPR. Supraglottic devices and airways are inserted by trained people, e.g. KPP rescuers and medical personnel.
