The multi-purpose retractor by Black Front is a practical, solid way to keep small equipment always to hand. It has a strong retractable cord up to 65 cm long, so you can use the tool straight away – without unclipping it from your belt or bag.

The retractor has two sturdy carabiners. The first is used to clip the whole thing to e.g. a trouser belt loop, backpack or bag, and the second to securely attach keys or tools. This increases functionality and protects equipment from being lost.

Most often the retractor is used for rescue scissors – e.g. XShear Heavy Duty or Black Front PRO – which return to their place by themselves after use. It also works well for keys, ID badges, access cards and other small tools.

The compact, lightweight design does not hinder movement or work. It is a small piece of equipment appreciated by rescuers, firefighters, nurses and anyone who reaches for the same equipment many times a day.

Why use a retractor for rescue scissors?

During a rescue there is no time to search pockets for scissors or pick them up off the ground. With a retractor, the tool is always in the same place, and after use the cord pulls it back – it will not be left in the ambulance, at the scene or in the patient's bed.

A clipped tool is also harder to drop when working in gloves. You will find more small equipment in the category medical and auxiliary accessories.

Massive haemorrhage – seconds count

With massive bleeding, quick action by a bystander can decide whether the casualty survives. Scissors let you expose the wound quickly, and the tourniquet and dressing must be available immediately. That is why bleeding control equipment should be carried in a fixed, easily accessible place, and reaching for it should be practised.

We describe how to recognise and stop massive haemorrhage in the guide chapter Massive haemorrhage – first aid.
