Celox A haemostatic dressing (Celox-A, Medtrade Products) is a haemostatic agent in an applicator containing 6 g of Celox granules. The applicator lets you place the agent precisely in hard-to-reach areas and deep wounds, such as gunshot or stab wounds.
Celox also works on the blood of people taking anticoagulants (heparin), because its action does not depend on clotting factors, and in hypothermia – even at blood temperatures below 18.5°C. It causes no exothermic reaction: it does not generate heat, does not burn and does not stick to the wound.
Celox-A is used to control bleeding when traditional methods prove ineffective. After the granules are applied, the wound is compressed and a pressure dressing is applied. The applicator is single-use. Celox A haemostatic dressing fits in an IFAK.
Why the Celox A haemostatic dressing?
A narrow, deep wound cannot be packed thoroughly with gauze – the applicator reaches where the vessel is bleeding. Celox A haemostatic dressing practise at our bleeding control training.
The gauze version is Celox Gauze Z-Fold. You will find others in the category haemostatic dressings.
How to use a haemostatic agent?
Put on gloves and expose the wound. Insert the applicator deep into the wound, towards the bleeding point, and deliver the granules. Press the wound firmly for at least 3 minutes, then apply a pressure dressing. For massive bleeding from a limb, apply a tourniquet first. Call for help on 112 – action taken by a bystander can decide whether the casualty survives. The dressings are single-use.
