Rules for using the first aid kit for massive bleeding
First assess the safety of yourself and the scene, put on gloves and call for help on 999 or 112. For massive bleeding, apply direct pressure to the wound with dressing gauze. When bleeding from a limb is life-threatening and pressure is not enough, apply a tourniquet: fasten it with the hook-and-loop strap, then turn the windlass rod until the bleeding stops.
A casualty's survival may depend on a bystander taking action, so it is worth knowing the order of steps before you reach for the tourniquet. We have described the details in the article Chapter II – Massive bleeding – first aid.
