WoundClot Surgical 5 X 5 cm is a sterile haemostatic gauze, a medical device intended for stopping bleeding during surgical procedures. It works on the basis of an advanced three-dimensional gel matrix. On contact with blood, the matrix turns into a strongly adhesive structure that stabilises the wound and stops the bleeding.
Gauze WoundClot Surgical 5 X 5 cm absorbs blood up to 25 times its own weight. The haemostatic effect lasts for up to 24 hours. WoundClot Surgical 5 X 5 cm is bioabsorbable and biodegradable, so it can remain in the wound, where it is fully resorbed within 7–14 days.
The pack contains 1 sterile gauze measuring 5 x 5 cm. The product is single-use, and once the packaging has been opened it must be used in full.
Why WoundClot Surgical 5 X 5 cm?
The 5 x 5 cm format works well where the bleeding area is small. WoundClot Surgical 5 X 5 cm is also available in other sizes, which allows you to match the dressing to the type of wound and anatomical area.
The gauze also works in patients taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication, and in coagulopathies. Its effectiveness in stopping arterial, venous and capillary bleeding is confirmed. Any remaining gel can be removed by rinsing it away with water or saline, without the risk of damaging tissue or vessels. The sealed packaging remains valid for up to 5 years.
Rules of use and removing excess gel
The gauze is applied by a trained person, as specialist equipment. Once haemostasis has been achieved, remove the excess material: moisten the injured area generously with water or saline and gently collect the excess from the wound. Around bone openings, areas confined by bone, the spinal cord, the optic nerve and the optic chiasm, the excess must always be removed, because the product may swell and exert unwanted pressure. Do not use the gauze if the packaging is damaged, do not re-sterilise it and do not use it after the expiry date.
In the case of massive bleeding outside an operating room, first ensure your own safety and call for help on 999 or 112. Then apply direct pressure to the wound, and for life-threatening bleeding from a limb, apply a tourniquet. You can read more about this procedure in the article Massive haemorrhage – first aid.
