WoundClot Surgical 10 X 10 cm is a sterile, single-use haemostatic gauze measuring 10 x 10 cm, sold in packs of 1 pc. It is a medical device intended for controlling bleeding during surgical procedures.

On contact with blood, the three-dimensional gel matrix turns into a strongly adhesive structure that stabilises the wound and stops the bleeding. The gauze absorbs blood up to 25 times its own weight, and its haemostatic action can last for up to 24 hours.

WoundClot gauze is available in many sizes, which allows the dressing to be matched to the type of wound and body area. This version measures 10 x 10 cm. WoundClot Surgical 10 X 10 cm is a sterile medical device packed in units of 1 pc.

Why WoundClot Surgical 10 X 10 cm?

In arterial, venous and capillary bleeding, stopping blood loss quickly is what matters. WoundClot Surgical 10 X 10 cm has proven effectiveness in controlling such bleeding in trauma, surgical and emergency settings, including in patients taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication and in coagulopathies. The gauze adheres to the surrounding tissue, which makes it easier to control the bleeding. In massive bleeding, firm direct pressure on the wound is still applied.

The gauze is bioabsorbable and biodegradable: it can remain in the wound and is fully resorbed within 7–14 days. Even so, once haemostasis has been achieved, it is recommended to remove the excess material. Moisten the injury area generously with water or saline and gently remove the excess from the wound. In bone foramina, areas confined by bone and near the spinal cord, optic nerve and optic chiasm, the excess must always be removed, because the product may swell and exert unwanted pressure. An unopened pack of WoundClot Surgical 10 X 10 cm keeps for up to 5 years if stored in a dry place at ambient temperature.

Managing bleeding and using the gauze

In severe bleeding, first make sure you are safe, then call for help on 999 or 112. In massive bleeding, direct pressure on the wound is the basis of treatment, and when limb bleeding is life-threatening, a tourniquet is used. Open the pack only just before use: sterility is maintained only if the unit pack has not been damaged or opened. Do not use the gauze if the pack is damaged or after the expiry date. Once opened, use it entirely, do not re-sterilise it and do not reuse it.

Store unopened packs in a dry place at a temperature from 5⁰C to 35⁰C. You can read more about managing severe bleeding in the article Chapter II – Massive bleeding – first aid.
