The high-concentration oxygen mask is used in passive oxygen therapy – in a casualty who is breathing on their own but needs oxygen. It has a one-way valve, a reservoir and 2.1 m oxygen tubing.

The reservoir collects oxygen between breaths, and the one-way valve means exhaled air does not return to the reservoir. As a result, the patient breathes air with a high oxygen concentration. Before fitting the mask, the reservoir is filled with oxygen by briefly blocking the valve with a finger.

The mask is available in adult and paediatric sizes. The KSRG guidelines provide for adult and paediatric oxygen masks with reservoir in R1 kits. The high-concentration oxygen mask is a basic part of every oxygen kit.

The high-concentration oxygen mask works with regulators, e.g. the Z-100.2.2.P. For lighter oxygen therapy, a useful item is the nasal cannula.

Why a high-concentration oxygen mask with reservoir?

An ordinary mask without a reservoir mixes oxygen with ambient air. The reservoir and one-way valve allow a much higher oxygen concentration to be given, which matters in seriously ill and injured patients.

Other equipment can be found in the category oxygen therapy.

Handling oxygen safely

Oxygen strongly supports combustion, so the regulator, valve and lines must not be greased with oil or touched with greasy hands. Keep the equipment away from fire and heat sources, and secure the cylinder against falling. Oxygen therapy is carried out by trained people, e.g. KPP rescuers.

In a life-threatening situation, the basics matter most – we describe them in the chapter Basic life support: CPR.
