First aid kit with eye wash – the two most common problems in one place
At work, you most often need to respond to a minor cut or eye irritation. A first aid kit with eye wash combines both solutions in one point on the wall. There is no need to search for fluid in a cupboard or plasters in a drawer, and the transparent cover lets you quickly check supplies and expiry dates.
Plum QuickSafe SOLO
PLUM QuickSafe SOLO wall first aid kit is a compact first aid station. The set includes:
- A Plum Eyewash bottle with 0.9% NaCl solution, 500 ml, with an eyecup tip.
- A QuickFix Elastic module with 45 elastic plasters.
The eye wash is used to rinse eyes in case of mechanical irritation, and the plasters protect minor skin cuts. The set suits offices, workshops, warehouses and assembly lines, as well as public offices and schools.
How to rinse an eye?
Tilt the casualty’s head towards the eye you are rinsing, open the eyelids and direct the stream from the inner corner of the eye outwards, so that the fluid does not run into the other eye. Do not rub the eye or remove an embedded foreign body. In case of a chemical burn, rinse for a long time with plenty of fluid and call for help on 999 or 112. After the bottle has been used, the kit needs restocking, so it is worth appointing someone to check its condition and expiry dates.
Where should you hang a first aid kit with eye wash?
Where an incident may occur: at a workstation, in a workshop or by an assembly line. The place should be visible and easily accessible, because after an eye injury the casualty often cannot see well and needs someone else’s help. A first aid kit with eye wash does not replace a full first aid kit, but it complements one well. In large plants, where the risk of contact with irritants is higher, a larger supply of fluid is useful – see the categories saline and eye wash. You will find a wider selection of kits in the category workplace first aid kits.
With serious injuries, action taken by a bystander can decide whether the casualty survives. We practise the management of eye injuries in our training Wound and Injury Care. Other products can be found in the category vision protection.
A first aid kit with eye wash works best as a permanent part of a workstation that all employees know about. Show it during induction and regularly check that the bottle is undamaged and in date. After rinsing, ask the casualty about pain, redness and worsening vision. If the symptoms persist or a chemical got into the eye, the casualty needs medical help. Do not let a person with an eye injury drive or operate machinery. It is also worth noting the name of the substance involved and passing it on to the emergency services. Such a first aid kit with eye wash needs no preparation; it just has to be in its place.
Wall-mounted stations are also suitable for a fixed point: Plum QuickSafe Basic, Complete and Chemical Industry, the last one for places with a risk of contact with corrosive substances or dust. In dusty environments, dust-tight boxes will work well: Plum iBox 1 and DUO set.
