The M1 face shield is a film CPR face shield – essential equipment in every first aid kit. It lets the person giving first aid deliver safe mouth-to-mouth rescue breaths.
The face shield has a plastic mouthpiece and a one-way valve that protects against direct contact with the casualty's secretions. A built-in filter protects the rescuer from infection by bacteria and viruses. The film part covers the casualty's face, and the mouthpiece is placed in their mouth.
It is a single-use product that should be protected from moisture. Folded, the M1 face shield takes up very little space, so it fits in a car or home first aid kit, a wallet or a keyring. Fear of contact with secretions is a common reason why bystanders skip rescue breaths – the face shield removes this barrier.
The M1 face shield is also part of the keyring with gloves and face shield. For practising on manikins you can use CPR training face shields with filter.
Why an M1 face shield in your first aid kit?
Action taken by a bystander can decide whether the casualty survives. The face shield makes rescue breaths safer, and the rescuer is more willing to perform full CPR.

How to use the face shield during CPR?
After 30 compressions, spread the face shield over the casualty's face, slide the mouthpiece into their mouth, tilt the head back and pinch the nose through the film. Give 2 gentle breaths through the mouthpiece, watching the chest rise, and return to compressions. If you cannot give breaths, continue with compressions only.
