The block head immobiliser for adults is a universal head immobilisation system used together with a spine board. It completes whole-body immobilisation: the board stabilises the torso, and the immobiliser stops the head from moving sideways while the casualty is moved and transported.

The head immobiliser consists of a base pad attached to the board, two blocks for lateral stabilisation and two head straps. The blocks have ear holes that allow the casualty’s ears to be observed even after the immobiliser is applied.

The immobiliser’s coating is waterproof and easy to clean, which makes it much easier to keep the set clean – after a call, simply wash and disinfect it. The head immobiliser is intended for adults. It is used with a spine board, e.g. a complete spine board.

For full immobilisation of the cervical spine, the immobiliser is used together with a cervical collar, e.g. the Laerdal Stifneck Select. Such a set is standard equipment for ambulance teams, fire brigade units and event medical cover rescuers.

Why is a head immobiliser needed with injuries?

With a suspected cervical spine injury, any uncontrolled head movement can make the damage worse. A collar limits flexion and extension of the neck, but the head can still rotate and move sideways. Side blocks with straps close off this range of movement and allow the casualty to be moved safely on the board.

The blocks also make teamwork easier: once the head is immobilised, the rescuer who was holding it can attend to other tasks. Other equipment can be found in the category evacuation and immobilisation.

Spinal injury – what does a bystander do?

If the casualty is conscious, breathing and the scene is safe, do not move them unnecessarily. Ask them to keep still, call for help and support the head in the position you found it. If, however, the casualty is not breathing normally, opening the airway and resuscitation are the priority – spinal protection must not delay them.

How to assess a casualty and establish what is most urgent is explained in the guide chapter Assessing the casualty.
