Gunshot in a Box gunshot wound trainer by Techline Technologies is a realistic soft tissue injury simulator designed for learning and improving wound packing technique and massive haemorrhage control. The model replicates a gunshot wound channel into which the trainee inserts gauze or a haemostatic dressing and then maintains direct pressure – exactly as required when dealing with life-threatening bleeding.
The trainer is made of SOFTTECH® silicone, whose multi-layer, colour-differentiated structure imitates skin and deeper tissues. The material gives a natural feel when working with your fingers in the wound and is also very durable: it withstands repeated exercises and is UV-resistant.
A built-in tubing system lets you connect simulated bleeding – e.g. the SKEDCO® FEBSS system or the Techline Blood Supply Pump reservoir with hand pump, sold separately. The click-fit connector allows a quick and secure connection to the pump. During the exercise the bleeding only slows down once the wound has been packed and compressed correctly, which gives the trainee instant feedback.
The compact Gunshot in a Box gunshot wound trainer fits in a 17.0 × 11.9 × 9.9 cm case, so it works well both in training centres and during field sessions, tactical exercises or first aid demonstrations.
Why does the Gunshot in a Box gunshot wound trainer teach more effectively?
Massive haemorrhage is one of the main preventable causes of death after injury. Wound packing is a technique that cannot be learned from a book or a video – it requires feel, strength and confident movements that can only be built through practice. Gunshot in a Box gunshot wound trainer lets you repeat this exercise many times until the movements become automatic – and it is exactly this automaticity that counts under stress. The Gunshot in a Box gunshot wound trainer fits in a small case, so it is easy to take to field sessions. The Gunshot in a Box gunshot wound trainer lets you practise with both gauze and a haemostatic dressing.
Every repetition takes place with real tissue resistance and blood flowing from the wound. The instructor can see whether the trainee has found the source of bleeding, packed the wound fully and maintained pressure long enough.
The trainer can be used with both gauze and haemostatic dressings, so trainees learn the differences between working with each material. Remember that dressings, gauze and bandages used in exercises with simulated blood are treated as single-use – in a real incident each dressing is used only once.
Massive haemorrhage control – the principles
With life-threatening bleeding speed matters: make sure you are safe, put on gloves, expose the wound and apply direct, firm pressure. If the wound is deep, pack it with gauze or a haemostatic dressing right to the bottom and press for at least several minutes. For bleeding from a limb that cannot be controlled with pressure, apply a tourniquet. Call for help on 112.
We describe the full algorithm, with the order of actions and the most common mistakes, in the guide chapter Massive haemorrhage – first aid. Good reading before your first session on the trainer.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Is the simulated blood pump included?
No. The set includes the trainer in a case. A blood simulation system, e.g. the Techline Blood Supply Pump, must be purchased separately.
How do I clean the trainer after a session?
After the exercises rinse the trainer with clean water, then with warm water and a mild detergent. It can also be disinfected with isopropyl alcohol or a diluted bleach solution. The trainer must be completely dry before it is put back in its case.
Is the trainer suitable for practising with haemostatic dressings?
Yes – the wound channel lets you practise packing with both ordinary gauze and haemostatic dressings.
