The Kramer splint set consists of 14 splints in various sizes, placed in disposable seamless covers. Kramer splints are a classic, proven way of immobilising fractures and sprains of the limbs: the wire ladder design can be bent to the shape of the limb and, once secured, provides stable splinting.

The set includes the following splints: 150 × 15 cm, 150 × 12 cm, 120 × 12 cm, 100 × 10 cm, 90 × 12 cm (2 pcs), 80 × 12 cm, 80 × 10 cm, 70 × 10 cm, 70 × 7 cm, 60 × 8 cm, 60 × 7 cm and 25 × 5 cm (2 pcs). This selection lets you immobilise anything from the fingers or wrist to an adult's whole lower limb.

In this version the set of Kramer splints has disposable covers – after use they are replaced with new ones, which ensures hygiene for subsequent casualties. Everything is placed in a carry bag made of waterproof, easy-to-clean material that withstands intensive use and cleans quickly.

Inside the bag there are two hook-and-loop straps to hold the splints together, and two handles let you carry it in your hand or over your shoulder. The Kramer splint set is standard equipment of R1 kits, ambulances, volunteer (OSP) and state (PSP) fire brigade units. A version with reusable covers is the set of 14 Kramer splints with reusable covers, and the bag on its own – Kramer splint carry bag.

Why is a set of Kramer splints in a bag a practical solution?

Loose splints easily get tangled and lost, and during a rescue you need to find the right size quickly. In the bag the splints are fastened and organised, so the rescuer takes out exactly the one they need, and after the rescue it is immediately clear what is missing. A set of Kramer splints in one bag also means fewer items to check during the daily equipment inspection.

A full set of 14 sizes means that whatever the injury site and the casualty's height, you always have the right splint. You will find other immobilisation equipment in the category evacuation and immobilisation.

Immobilising with a Kramer splint – the principles

Shape the splint on the casualty's uninjured limb or your own, so that it spans the two adjacent joints. Pad it with soft material, place it against the limb in the position found and secure it with a bandage, starting from the distal end. Check circulation, sensation and movement of the fingers or toes before and after immobilisation.

We write about assessing the casualty and setting priorities in the guide chapter Assessing the casualty.
