The MAX Plus 19.5×29 cm gel heat pack (MAX Plus) is a heat compress for warming a casualty during rescue operations – a quick source of heat that helps protect against hypothermia. The 19.5 × 29 cm size works well on the chest and back.

The compress is activated by clicking the metal disc inside – the solution starts to crystallise and heats the pack to approx. 54°C. Once it has cooled, the heat pack can be prepared for reuse: boil it in water for 6–10 minutes until the crystals have completely dissolved. This means one heat pack can be used many times.

The heat pack is applied through a layer of clothing or a towel, not directly on the skin. It works best in combination with a blanket, e.g. the Blizzard Survival blanket, which retains heat. The MAX Plus 19.5×29 cm gel heat pack is worth having in a rescue backpack and in the car in winter.

Why the MAX Plus 19.5×29 cm gel heat pack?

A blanket limits heat loss but does not provide heat. The heat pack gives active warmth without electricity or batteries, and being reusable makes it cheaper to use than disposable heat packs. The MAX Plus 19.5×29 cm gel heat pack apply to the casualty's torso, through clothing.

A smaller heat pack is the MAX 11 × 25 cm, and the largest – Super MAX 20 × 45 cm.

Warming a hypothermic casualty – safely

Insulate a hypothermic casualty from the ground and wrap them in a blanket, and apply the heat pack to the torso – the chest, armpits or the back of the neck – always through a layer of clothing or a towel. Do not place the heat pack directly on the skin, especially of an unconscious person, a small child or someone with impaired sensation, as it can easily cause burns. Do not rub the limbs or give alcohol. In severe hypothermia call 112.
