The intraosseous access trainer IO in a Box® by Techline Technologies is used to learn and improve the technique of obtaining intraosseous (IO) access in the proximal tibia. It is a tool for paramedics, medical staff and uniformed services who must be able to obtain vascular access quickly in emergencies.
The simulator replicates skin structure and bone density, so the trainee practises with realistic tissue and bone resistance. The model is made of silicone that imitates skin and soft tissue, with multi-layer colouring and SOFTTECH® material, which is durable and UV-resistant.
The intraosseous access trainer works with manual and electrically powered intraosseous access systems, e.g. EZ-IO® or SAM IO® (sold separately). Spring-loaded systems such as B.I.G. or NIO are not recommended by the trainer's manufacturer. The set includes replaceable bone inserts, and more can be purchased as a set of 3 replacement bone inserts.
The compact design and a 17.0 × 11.9 × 9.9 cm carry case make the intraosseous access trainer easy to take to sessions at a training centre, in a unit or to field exercises.
Why is an intraosseous access trainer worth having at a training centre?
Intraosseous access is performed rarely, but usually in the most difficult situations – cardiac arrest, shock or trauma, when peripheral veins are inaccessible. A skill that is not practised regularly fades quickly, so a realistic trainer helps keep it at a level that gives confidence in action.
Replaceable bone inserts let many trainees practise on one device, and compatibility with popular IO systems means you train with the equipment you use every day. You will find other Techline trainers in the category trainers.
Advanced procedures are one of the links in the chain of survival
Intraosseous access is an advanced life support procedure performed by trained staff. Its effectiveness, however, depends on the earlier links: quickly calling for help, immediate resuscitation by bystanders and early defibrillation.
We describe how all the links fit together in the article How the chain of survival has saved thousands.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Which insertion site does the trainer replicate?
The proximal tibia.
Can the bone inserts be replaced?
Yes – the set includes replaceable bone inserts, and more are available as a set of 3 inserts.
