The SAM XT tactical tourniquet by SAM Medical is a tourniquet for quickly stopping bleeding from an amputated or crushed limb. The design requires little force, so the casualty can apply it to themselves with one hand. It is recommended by the CoTCCC.

TRUFORCE technology automatically locks the strap when it is pulled tight enough – the teeth remove slack before you start turning the windlass. This means you do not have to tighten the strap several times, and pressure is achieved with fewer turns. The strap is approx. 4 cm wide with hook-and-loop closure, and the tourniquet has space for recording the time of application.

The tourniquet is light, durable and weather-resistant. A wide adjustment range lets you apply it to the limb of an adult or a child. It is available in three colours – choose one in the product options: black (discreet on tactical equipment), blue (stands out among equipment) and orange (clearly visible in a civilian first aid kit). The SAM XT tactical tourniquet fits in an IFAK, a car first aid kit and a company first aid kit.

Why the SAM XT tactical tourniquet?

Massive bleeding from a limb can cause death within minutes – longer than it takes an ambulance to arrive. The automatic strap lock shortens application and limits errors under stress, especially in self-aid. After applying the SAM XT tactical tourniquet, record the time.

Other tourniquets can be found in the category tourniquets and pressure bars.

How do you apply a tactical tourniquet?

A tourniquet is applied for massive bleeding from a limb that cannot be controlled by pressure. Apply it high on the limb, 5–7 cm above the wound (and if you cannot see the source of the bleeding – as high as possible), pull the strap tight, then turn the windlass until the bleeding stops. Lock the windlass and record the time of application. Do not loosen the tourniquet – only medical personnel remove it. Call for help on 112 – action taken by a bystander may decide whether the casualty survives. Practise on a training tourniquet and keep an unused one in your first aid kit.
