Evacuation backpack – ready before you need it
A fire, flood or prolonged outage can force you to leave your home within minutes. An evacuation backpack is a set prepared in advance that you can grab immediately, without packing in a hurry. It works at home, in a car and when travelling. The equipment is divided into pouches, making it easy to find and restock.

The ETK Mini set is a compact backpack with a capacity of approx. 16 l and dimensions of approx. 36 × 30 × 15 cm. With its equipment it weighs approx. 5 kg. It has six modules:
- Home&Travel First Aid Kit – a first aid pack: disinfecting wipes, NRC foil, plasters, swabs, saline, blister plasters and a medical mask.

- Hypothermia – a module protecting against hypothermia.
- Connectivity – a separate module for communication.

How do you prepare an evacuation backpack?
A ready-made set is a base that you need to adapt to yourself. Put copies of your documents in the Personal items pouch and keep cash in the back pocket. Add any medicines you take regularly and items needed by children or older people. Keep your evacuation backpack in a permanent place near the exit and tell your household where it is. Check expiry dates and battery condition from time to time. The side elastic straps can hold, for example, a tourniquet, which is not included in the set. You will find individual items in the category rescue blankets, and modular first aid kits let you expand the medical part. You can also add separate TRAUMA KIT modules from this category to the backpack: Communication module (C) and Meal module (M).
Evacuation backpack and first aid
In an emergency, first assess safety, call for help on 999 or 112 and move to a safe place. Only then decide whether and how you can help others. With massive bleeding, direct pressure is the basis – Massive haemorrhage – first aid. Read about cold and NRC foil in the article First aid for hypothermia. In a life-threatening situation, a bystander taking action can decide whether the casualty survives, and we practise using the equipment at our first aid training.
An evacuation backpack should not be too heavy, so before adding personal items put it on and walk with it for a while. Also rehearse with your household who takes the backpack and where you go if you cannot return home. Agree on a meeting place and how to stay in touch if there is no signal, because such decisions are hard to make under stress. If there are children or people needing care at home, consider a separate backpack for each adult.
A smaller option is the the17bag handy kit: a pouch measuring 20 x 10 x 8 cm and weighing approx. 380 g, with ten items of equipment. The larger Emergency Backpack 17 has a capacity of 28 l and four waterproof, removable pouches, while the ETK backpack has seven equipped modules and an empty pouch for personal items.
